Session Plans overview

A Session Plan is a session where an Observer, such as a BCBA, works with an Observee, such as an RBT or a trainee, on the skills that matter: watching them run a program with a Client, reviewing a recorded session, or talking through a recent case. Session Plans are how skill levels get measured: they turn day-to-day clinical work into tracked, observable progress.

Session Plans are not only for formal competency checks. A routine supervision catch-up is a Session Plan too: use the same workspace to review cases, take notes, and record a few observations when they come up. Reach for a Session Plan whatever the cadence, from a structured RBT Task List assessment to a weekly supervision.

Whatever shape the session takes, it flows through the same Session Plan and builds the same record:

  • An Observer (the supervisor or expert) and an Observee (the person being supervised).
  • The skills to observe or discuss in the session.
  • Notes captured before, during, and after.
  • Observations: the scores recorded for the skills that were assessed.

An ABA organization starts with four types, chosen from Type when you plan one:

TypeUse it for
Session PlanRoutine supervision and observation. It is the default type, listed as Staff Observation under Customization.
BACB SupervisionSupervision that counts toward a trainee’s fieldwork or an RBT’s ongoing supervision. It names the two people Supervisor and Supervisee and carries the BACB fields.
BACB Independent SessionA trainee logging their own independent fieldwork hours.
Self-assessmentRating yourself against your own skills.

The two BACB types feed the BACB reports once they are done. See BACB Session Plans.

The same workspace adapts to whatever the session is for:

  • Supervision sessions: a recurring check-in between a supervisor and a supervisee. Keep the agenda in the Session Plan, work through the notes captured since last time, and record observations when they come up.
  • In-session observations (overlaps): the supervisor watches the RBT work with a Client in the clinic, at home or at school, and takes data on the skills in focus, such as prompting, reinforcement delivery or data collection.
  • Feedback request (supervisee-led): the supervisee asks for the session, choosing who they want feedback from and which skills to focus on. See Collaborative Session Plans.
  • Recorded-session review: when there is a session video to assess, the supervisor can review and score it on their own time, with no live session needed. See Files & media.
  • Performance reviews: a session focused on summarizing progress over a period, which both people can sign off.
