Running the RBT Competency Assessment

Every RBT applicant has to demonstrate the tasks on BACB’s Initial Competency Assessment, and every certified RBT repeats the Recertification Competency Assessment each year. In Behaview the assessment is a skill set, RBT Competency Assessment (2026), from the Skills Library. You assign it to candidates, score each task in a Session Plan as they demonstrate it, and their profile shows what is left.

The set has four skillsets and 19 tasks, numbered as on BACB’s assessment:

SkillsetTasks
A. Measurement01 to 03, such as 01. Continuous Measurement
B. Assessment04 and 05, such as 04. Preference Assessments
C. Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction06 to 14, such as 06. Discrete-Trial Teaching and 11. Prompting. Task 14 holds 14a, 14b and 14c, of which the candidate demonstrates one. Three of tasks 6 to 14 must be demonstrated with a Client.
D. Professionalism and Requirements15 to 19, such as 15. Session Notes and 18. Supervision Requirements

Each task is scored by how the candidate demonstrated it, and the buttons offer only the methods that task allows:

ButtonUsed for
With a ClientTasks 01 to 15: you watch them perform the task with a Client receiving services.
Role-PlayTasks 01 to 15: another person acts as the Client, when circumstances do not allow a Client.
InterviewTasks 13 and 15 to 19: they describe the concept live, with examples and non-examples.
Not MetEvery task: they did not demonstrate competence.

Hover a button to read the full description of the method. Any method other than Not Met passes the task, and one passing score clears its mastery bar.

  1. Import the set. Someone who can edit skills opens Skills Library under Manage in the menu, finds RBT Competency Assessment (2026), and selects Import skillset. If your organization chose I want to train and/or assess RBTs in Account Setup, it is already imported, together with the RBT Test Content Outline and an RBT Candidate role that requires both. See Account setup.

  2. Require it on the candidates’ role. Add the set to the role your candidates hold, such as RBT Candidate or Behavior Technician, and mark it required. A Session Plan can only score skills the Observee holds through a role, a team or their career plan.

  3. Put the candidate in that role. Add them to the role, and give them a Supervisor relationship with the assessor.

  1. Plan a Session Plan with the candidate as Observee. On the Session Plan form, under Skills, tick RBT Competency Assessment (2026) to select every task at once, or tick one skillset to cover it in this session.

  2. Score each task as it is demonstrated. During the session, select With a Client, Role-Play, Interview or Not Met on each task you saw. Leave the rest: you can spread the assessment across several sessions, and skipped tasks stay untouched. See Running a session.

  3. Note the evidence. Record what you saw, and with which Client or role-play, in Observation Notes.

  4. Complete and sign. Complete the Session Plan, then both of you sign it in Signatures, so the record shows when the assessment took place and who ran it. See Signing off.

Once the candidate is certified, move them to your RBT role, set Qualification to RBT, and add their Certification ID (see Certification fields). From then on, their monthly supervision is checked on the BACB Ongoing Supervision Report. For the annual recertification assessment, run the same set again in a new Session Plan. See Ongoing supervision for RBTs and BCaBAs.
